Reflective Journal

The aim of the reflective journal is to allow me a way of expressing and logging my learning and experiences during the year on MA Digital Fashion @ Leeds Art University. I’ve chose to split the journal into trimesters to help categorise the given modules for that period. Week by week I’ll log my progress through the use of imagery, research material, experimental projects and documentations and I’ll give the good, bad and the ugly so even when it goes wrong it’ll be going in.

Trimester 1 – (27th Sept 21 – 17th Dec 21)

Module 701 – Techniques For Design

Rationale

This module will give an overview of techniques used in digital fashion, and allow you to build on your varied experience and practice and be guided in relation to your chosen outcome. Through the use of leading software applications which allow for an intuitive method of design in innovative ways, you will be able to contribute to responsible design systems and practice.

In this module, you begin to further develop attributes such as self-direction and the systematic application of critical awareness directly in relation to your practice. In consultation with tutors and peers, you will outline and plan in detail your practice-based research project, which will develop as a result of questions, problems or unexpected outcomes of the simultaneous work for the module, Research for Professional Context. You will investigate approaches and develop techniques to visualise your research and development.

Below are my Project Proposal and a research and learning plan for the module.

Module 702 – Research for Professional Context

Rationale

Research for Professional Context is designed to draw in useful references and critical perspectives, all of which can enrich experiences of viewing and making creative outputs. Grounded in an academic yet imaginative approach to contemporary, theoretical and historical contexts, it encourages an informed questioning related to individual practice.

Aims

To engender an experimental, critical, and creative engagement with the student’s own context and creative industrial links through practice development planning. Students will acquire self-direction and an awareness of the complex issues that impact upon organisations that support the creative industries.

Below is my first 5 minute presentation material where I explain about my practice to date and my aims for the MA and the initial modules.

Trimester 2 – (5th Jan 22 – 25th March 22)

Module 703 – Innovation for Industry

Rationale

Innovation for industry will be informed by the initial investigations into your own contexts and creative industry links supported by the practice, research interests and development planning established in the Techniques for Design and Research for Professional Context modules.

The Innovation for Industry module will allow you to engage with industry, including working on industry briefs, supporting the further exploration of your overall research question in real world contexts. Through the application of your knowledge, you will develop a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry can be used to create and interpret advanced knowledge within digital fashion.

You will learn to apply your ideas and concepts to real life scenarios within the fashion industry, using digital techniques to evaluate methods and develop critiques of them.

Module 704 -Contextualising Your Practice

Rationale

This module promotes in-depth and systematic understanding of current theoretical perspectives relating to creative specialist practice and demands that students use research methods and apply them to the production of resolved verbal, visual/object-based or written work.

This module engages students in research, critical analysis and the synthesis of the practice and text based aspects of the course. It is expected that students will engage with concepts and issues that underpin and inform creative work and the creative industries.

Trimester 3 – (11th April 22 – 1st July 22)

Module 705 – Actualising Digital Fashion

Rationale

This module will allow you to focus, consolidate and resolve your initial research and development on an area of personal interest and industry relevance.

You will be expected to select, consolidate and apply your own new knowledge materialised in your creative outcomes, in a supportive and critical environment.

Drawing on your developing expertise in research and specialist professional practices, built up through the preceding modules, this module enables you to conclude a deep and extended practice- based investigation into the forefront of digital fashion design.
