Trimester Three – Week One

Module 705 – Actualising Digital Fashion

This week marks the start of the final module and I have been reviewed the requirements, considering what I would like to achieve and how I envisage the finished project.

Maison DAO Collaboration with Kostika Spaho

I have been asked to collaborate on a shoe design by Kostika Spaho as part of my work with Maison DAO. Working on the OBJ file I created optional prints onto the UV’s of the strap section of the shoe using Substance Painter. I enjoyed working on this as it encouraged me to work in new ways, developing my skills by exploring what is possible in the software.

London Trip

Easter holidays and a family trip to London visiting The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Harrods.

In the Science Museum I was drawn to a prototype string model of a vaulted roof which uses mathematical training to show how straight elements can be used for curved forms, dated 1872. This made me realise my previous influences from Barbara Hepworth and string work from others I identified earlier in the year.

I have worked in CLO3D to explore how I can create this effect using circles to attach straight lengths, the process was time consuming and I had to work on the order and distance between each of the pieces, dropping this a small intervals once all were in place. I firstly mapped out the patterns using the measurement tool which gave me an idea of how the pieces could look, then using the measured lines I created a straight narrow pattern piece giving it a low particle distance to help the simulation with each piece sewn at exact intervals, I further explored placing alternate colours onto the pieces to enhance the effect.

I was also taken my the curved roof shapes and purple/pink light that was emitted, I enjoyed the symmetry and shapes that extend and curve out and around and how it helped to divide the room into areas.

I have been working on curves within my work and haven’t been sure how to use it fully so I was excited to see a video demonstrating the airflow that takes place as an aircraft is in flight, I was taken by the shapes and symmetry that happened and the patterns created. Using curve shapes that I previously created using coded information from Python and Rhino I explored pattern options using Illustrator and worked on a garment where I have placed the pattern as I felt best fit.

In the window at Harrods I saw this chair, the print reminded me of one I created using the Digital Textile Design book. I want to refer back to this book to help create some prints into selected colourways.

The display of rocks, crystals and metals were of interest for the natural forms, shapes and colours and I’m drawn to the curved shapes created in the rocks due to pressure that squashed and squeezed them.

Another area of interest was the butterflies and bird on display were I am interested with the symmetry, shapes, patterns and colours. I was really taken by the colour changing blue butterfly as you moved around the display.

The Festival of Britain’s Patterns from Nature 1950-51

Seeing this made me realise how I could use inspiration from nature to inform print designs.

The metal man – the patterns and details on the upper body really interested me, reminding me of the statues in the work of Gary McQueen where the skin on the back was pulled back. The colours of the metal where it has been heated is stunning and reminds me of oil in water I love how the colours spread and merge into each other.
