Trimester Two – Week Four

I have been struggling to understand which direction to go in this week, I feel I have so many ideas of what I’d like to do and everyone seems like the right thing to do, this is causing me to feel overwhelmed and pressured.

I need to find my direction!

New Designs

I wanted to explore how easy and which processes I’d need to take to create new designs from garments (blocks) that I have already created. With the settings in CLO3D this process is made easy and quick and proved to be a fantastic way of creating new design ideas from existing work. I am really pleased with the result of this garment, through changing the skirt length, adding straps and altering the fabrication I have been able to quickly create a new style.

The Fabricant – Workshop – Dressing yourself in digital garments (24/01/2022)

I have been really encouraged by this workshop, this has been an area that I have wanted to improve on after trying to add a digital dress to one of my own images previously (with a little success) It is really encouraging to see their process and understand the steps you need to take to achieve a good result with the uses of positioning, styling, lighting in CLO3D and editing in Photohop. I got straight to work on experimenting with this process using an image from the web. I choose an image where the wearer had little clothing on and also the hair was away from the body, which all helps in creating a good final image with a digital asset. Below is the finished result which I am happy with but I would render the front neck section individually and remove some of the pieces which won’t be seen as I have had to cut away these and this has resulted in the stringed section not looking as good as it could have been.

The Digital Fashion Group 101 Academy – Week 3

This course is really helping me to think about how I can use digital innovations to develop business models that work differently to those that are currently at play as they allow for digital garment to be created and sold as a digital assets that have the potential to become a physical garment once there has been an order placed, helping to create a positive income stream and reduce the over production of garments were an assumption of a sale is made. The course also touched on how the blockchain is being used to provide consumers with greater transparency and social responsibility information and how it is being used within departments to share and store information.

  • Look at Aura Blockchain (LVMH/Prada)
  • MyMCQ – MCQ (British Brand)

There have been two interviews – Platform E (Goncala Cruz) & Diigitals (Cameron-James Wilson)

Platform E‘s, Goncala explained how they are working with luxury brands to provide a service that creates the 3D digital assets and is able to put them to market, they use data from the consumers to better understand which fabrics/styles/materials are like and other an alternative system that works as a pull system by taking orders before producing. He does say that this system does work better for luxury brands as they are able to produce shorter runs for production. Their goal is to drastically reduce consumption or resources by reducing overproduction, and on top save in other ways that are also involved (transport/fuel/land/water/chemicals etc)

Diigitals, Cameron explained his background as a photographer and how he came about creating the World’s first digital supermodel Shudu. It was interesting to hear which programmes he uses and it made me want to look into using DAZ3D and motion capture.

Research

I have been reviewing a variety of reports from McKinsey & Co, WGSN, Wrap, Ellen MacArthur Foundation and have been referring back to some past research on sustainability and digital fashion to grasp a good understand on the current fashion industry from research on a prior course by The Centre for Sustainable Fashion.

Exploring my surrounding area for inspiration

One of the areas I have wanted to explore within my design work is biomimicry and nature and after being inspired by the work of

(Piero D’Angelo – who has created growing fabrics within his designs using lichens and algae’s, he’s also created the digital twins which are currently selling on DressX and available in their metaverse store.)

I thought it would be good to see the nature in my close environment and so I took myself on a walk to explore, uncover and examine. The mushrooms are so detailed and amazing to examine the detail, it would be good to explore using the shapes within my design development for my final project 705 Module.
