Trimester Two – Week Five

Narrowing down my research question!

I have been using this week to concentrate on understanding what I am wanting to answer and have been asking myself questions to try to ascertain what that is.

  • How sustainable is digital fashion and how does it compare to traditional fashion?
  • What does a business need to implement digital within their supply chain? and what are the benefits?
  • Do digital technologies offer a sustainable solution for the fashion industry for the growing needs of being transparent and environmentally friendly?
  • Does the Metaverse and Blockchain technology offer solutions for the fashion needs of a growing population?
  • Does digital technology & a circular economy (mindset) offer solutions for the fashion needs of a growing population?

And I started to ask myself how all of this can be measured.

After asking these questions I have realised that I am concerned by how digital technologies are being used throughout the supply chain and how it can have an impact on the manufacturing, so I will concentrate on this area, going forward with the question

Q – Can Digital Technologies help on demand manufacturing in the fashion industry?

This has help me establish and compile my Methodology.

Discover – Define – Develop – Deliver

I have started to research and compile information within these areas

  • The Fashion Landscape
  • Digital Technoligies
  • Sustainability
  • Circular systems and economies
  • Market sectors
  • UK Consumer Anaylsis
  • Digitial Technology Companies
  • 3D Fashion Design Software Companies

CLO3D

I have continued my development in CLO3D and have been working on creating a bodysuit and further adapting patterns I have creating with the inclusion of placed print work from my previous 701 module learning. I have also been exploring how to further style with the use of poses and through adjusting the material properties.

I have also been exploring cutting and sewing shaped sections which have prints applied to the back and the front of the fabric and the effect that this has this has been influenced by an image that I saw in a homeware store.

Digital Fashion Group – Week 4

This weeks sessions talked about the rise of the B Economy and the B-Lab Certified companies which are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit. The companies are legally required to consider not just the profit but what good they are doing for society.

Some B-Corps include

  • Patagonia
  • Wolf & Badger (1st UK Company)
  • Eilleen Fisher
  • Athleta

There were two interviews, one from Unspun a denim brand that is using an on demand business model for their denim jeans and Lablaco that are providing a blockchain service for manufacturers to allow them to provide transparency and traceability within each of their offers with the use of QR codes in each garment; they also have an app that allows consumers to produce an inventory of their wardrobe and allows them to trade, swap, borrow and loan.

I really enjoyed the interview from Beth Esponnette the Co-Founder of Unspun as she discussed her background and her passion to discover solutions to the problems she was witnessing in the fashion supply chain and how she came to build the business model and the problems they are faced with. The consumer uses an app that scans their body and provides measurement data to Unspun, they are able to select the style, material, threads and colours enabling a personalised service that has a turn around of a few weeks.

Community work

I have started to consider how I could use digital fashion to help educate and inform communities about the environmental impact of fashion and have started to think about what would be possible and what would be required.

Leeds City Museum

I had some time out to explore the museum and was taken by the butterflies on display, I’ve taken some images to remind myself as this could be an area to explore for design inspiration and development, the Egyptian room contained lots of work with patterns which I found interesting and could be useful again for print development or for environment building.

I particularly liked the paper birds on the wires which made me consider how I could use this idea within my submission to add to the environment.
