Niall Cotterel – Industry Lecture
I feel really inspired after hearing Niall talking about his experience with the luxury fashion and his move into digital fashion with The Fabricant, it was great to understand his workflow between the different software’s and how he has developed his skills. It was good to see his portfolio of work and has made me understand the importance of having a varied and up to date examples of work. I managed to ask a few questions and his responses were really informed and helpful so I hope I’ll be able to use some of this within my dissertation and research. He made a great suggestion to start moving into Adobe Substance and Blender if you feel you have covered your basic knowledge in CLO3D and so I have started to watch a tutorial on substance via Linkedin learning and would like to find time to revisit the Blender tutorials to refresh my understanding.
Projection Mapping
One of the areas I have wanted to explore and expressed in my Master application was to experiment with projection mapping to consider moving into new areas I’ve never explored before. I choose to use one of my existing style as the silhouette as it seemed fitting to experiment on due to it’s dramatic structure. For this experimental work I have worked with a Film Maker and Projection Mapper, Wayne Sables. Wayne has been able to provide the visuals and manipulated them according to what I found interesting. Doing this has been me think about how I can take this idea into the digital space. I really like how the patterns move and transform into new patterns and colours. I am really excited by this and it would be great to provide my own patterns for mapping.
Digital Fashion Group 101 Academy – Week 6
This is the final week and so it was mainly a recap on who we had heard from and then there was a webinar from digital industry key people were some fantastic points were raised and covered so this should provide me with some evidence within my research.
I have really enjoyed this course and feel so thankful that I found it when I did as it has really helped to inform me, of companies that I wasn’t aware of, on-demand manufacturing, blockchain technologies and AI technologies.
Metropolis Film 1927
I’ve been reading a few reports this week to re-cap my thoughts and one that stuck out was a report from ARUP 2050 Scenarios were they offer 4 scenarios of what life on earth could look like in 2050 based on the climate and actions of the the people and governments, it was interesting and scary to think about 2050 and the impact we can have for a better or worse earth. One of the scenarios that I was interested in and felt I could relate to was
POST ANTHROPOCENE shows how societal
conditions and planetary health might exist in a
harmonious relationship, fortifying each other for
mutual progress and benefit. Taman, a biotech project
manager in Jakarta, is finding his place in this
balanced world.
One of the films that they mention as a reference was Metropolis and this is a film that had been mentioned whilst watching the Digital Fashion Group Academy so I thought it would be of benefit to watch. The film was made in 1927 and is a reflection on an alternative civilization where there is a huge divide between the rich and poor with the poor being used for their labour without a care for their welfare as they work tirelessly to maintain the machine that keeps everything going. The film really touches on some of the key themes and problems that are happening with our current society and it’s interesting to see their predictions with robotic human machines. I really liked the transformation of the robot into the female and the mechanics of the robot.

Unreal Engine – Futures in Fashion
I have been following an Unreal tutorial which is focused on fashion, it has been a great course that allowed for the exploration of the many functions and tools within Unreal and it has enabled me to produce a short animated video were I have set the scene, changing some of the background details, set up the lighting, position the provided garment and set up a camera with a rig to follow around the garment. I have explored using the assets and set up in two environments to really try to get a feel for the process.

Substance – Creating fabric textures and prints.
I have been following tutorials for using Substance for creating fabrics from images and then how to include print details onto the sample cloth.
