Week 10

I have spent most of my time this week starting to prepare for the hand in for Module 701, aiming to complete most of the digital sheets and to start thinking about my conclusions for each of the areas I have been exploring. My aim is to hand in by Monday 13th December. Alongside this I have been Laser Cutting, watching tutorials from The Fabricant and attended an online Conference by Exthereal.

Laser Cutting

Based on my previous laser cut trials I have created some further files aiming to focus more on the Kirigami style of cutting, an area that I believe offers interesting details and functional properties. I have used the created Kirigami board as a reference to some of the cuts I have incorporated; these have been taken from many areas of industry including, fashion, arts, science and engineering, as I really want to broaden my research.

Below are the results of the laser cutting for this week. I have taken the cut pieces on to the stand where I have been able to play around with positioning on the mannequin. I am really liking the circular cuts as they are able to offer a curved shape on to the body and I also like the pointed cuts as they allow the fabric to be manipulated and opened up to create interesting effects. Some of the fabrics have scorched in areas which would be something that I need to look into further when the actual fabrics are selected.

Exthereal – Fashion in Extended Reality Conference

Monday 29th November 2021

I spent all of the morning going in to the afternoon watching a Conference held by Exthereal, they had many guest speakers on and it has been of great benefit to my learning. It has been really good to see and hear how others are working in digital fashion and to hear their opinions on what to expect for its future. One of the talks I really enjoyed was that of Auroboros were they talked about their projects and further expansion.

The Fabricant – Online Workshop 30-11-2021

https://www.twitch.tv/thefabricant/videos

The Fabricant held their once monthly tutorial which they host on Twitch. This tutorial was aimed at explaining about the UV maps and how they use them. They explained how to create the maps using images of fabrics scanned in and they showed how to use both Adobe Illustrator and also Substance sampler and how to use the maps within CLO3D with indications about some of the further settings that can be used to achieve good or different results. They also demonstrated how to create pockets with buttons and explained about the positioning and how to move the pocket into place using the pivot point (something that was new to me!) they went onto explain how to add lines that can be folded in the required direction and how to add stitching effects without having to use the stitch tool by creating internal lines and duplicated the pocket flap layer.

One of the things that I took away from this tutorial was their use of a library and it made me realise how this could be beneficial for myself. They use the library to create and store garment details such as pockets that can be opened and added to the garment style that is being worked on. I really like this way of working and I feel it will be a good idea for me to work on my own library of styles which I will be able to later use throughout my collections.

Adobe Illustrator

I have completed the Adobe Illustrator course. I have found this course really helpful, especially with the creation of brushes which I used to create the cuts for the laser cutting files.
