Week 2

Week 2

During our lecture time this week we were asked to introduce ourselves and give a quick description of what we are thinking of achieving with the course, it was really interesting to hear how everyone had different ideas of working in this digital space and everyone had ideas that are unique to them. For the following week we have been asked to put together a presentation to show our background and other work we have created, so I’ve worked on two boards to show my personal development from my Degree and Post Graduate collections and also a page to show my most recent work within my job role as Nightwear Designer/Creative Pattern Cutter for David Nieper. I was initially reluctant to show the nightwear work as I feel it doesn’t show my true creativity but I felt it important to express why I am truly passionate about moving on and working in new and exciting ways with the opportunity to explore and experiment, it is also a good way for me to reflect upon my personal achievements and experience of working in the industry for 14+ years.

When I reflect on my previous collections I am struck by how they can fit in with my current work and research. In 2008 my Evolution in Mind Graduate Collections I explored the potential of space travel, human evolution and considered how technology is changing the human experience and then in 2013 my PgDip Collection – Abstraction was linked to the work of Barbara Hepworth where I was interested in the hollows, nature based structures and how they linked together in a linear eye catching way. This got me to reflect on some further imagery I’d be saving and it’s now got my questioning how I can incorporate this with my work.

Rhino & PythonScript

The second week also consisted of more learning in Rhino as I continue on with the course content. I’m pleased with my learning so far and keen to keep up the progress. I’m really excited by the prospect of what can be achieved in a quick time with the right code inputted and I’m starting to understand the power of coding, although I still question wether it will be something I’ll be able to maintain due to it’s complexities.

Below are a selection of images which show the learning of the week which covered copying shapes and laying it down with inputed values with the addition of adding a randomisation to the code to create varying sizes and positioning place values.

With some of the codes I’ve used in the course I was really pleased by the outcome and felt the creation were true mathematical things of beauty so I decided it would be nice to experiment with taking the created patterns into Illustrator and Photoshop to re-colour and create prints that could be taken into CLO3D and used on the garment. It felt great to be using a print that I had created using code and it was something that I would have never been able to achieve or consider prior to this.

My initial thinking for wanting to learn to code was to explore it’s use in replicating 3D structures using research around Biomimicry but i’m discovering that I’m able to leverage the assets to create prints which I can then use in other softwares like Adobe illustrator/Photoshop and CLO3D.

Blender

I’ve completed the course in blender which finished by covering how to create simply animations that explored how to set key frames, parent pieces together, how to move, scales and rotated objects and finally I created an animation of a ball hitting a wall which started to get me thinking about how to animate objects and create effects that react as they would in real life.

Linkedin Learning

I’ve started to use Linkedin Learning to search for new training courses and I contacted Stephen Cusdin to enquire about using the 3D printer, he has provided me with links to learning for this topic so I plan to watch theses so I am familiar with the process.

I’ve saved a further course on Blender which explores the workspace, sculpting, animation and particles effects so I’m hoping to start this course next week.
